Galerie Bart is proud to present Under The Resting Clouds, a solo exhibition by the artist Bas Kosters. Bas worked as an artist in residence at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC) at the end of 2022. There, he expanded his knowledge of materials and created a series of works in ceramic. This series is now being exhibited in its entirety for the first time at the gallery, complemented by drawings produced during the same period.
The unique visual language of this multidisciplinary artist makes his work distinctive. Bas creates a world that explores both personal and societal themes through drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, installation, jewellery, graphic design, photography, music, performance and costume. He takes an inner journey through his colourfully striking and naive figures, some of which pop up again from time to time in his work. By visualising themes such as joy and emotional self-awareness, Bas evokes a certain recognition from the viewer without being pedantic. There is no specific aim, just informality.
Working with ceramics is very different from the textiles that Bas is more accustomed to. This presented him with the challenge of instilling the same naive energy and softness found in his textile sculptures into the new material. That led to the creation of the series Brut Cute, composed of six soft-looking yet heavy sculptures, and four wall objects, the Resting Clouds, referenced in the title of the exhibition.
Influenced by the material, the objects have now gained a new mystical quality that forms a delicate symbiosis with the figurative naivety of his work. Mysticism is literally translated by Bas into his sculpture series JOY Ceremonial set. Through this triptych, Bas gives you the opportunity to take a moment out in a confusing and hardening society. A candle holder, an incense burner and a wishing well are offered for performing a joyful ritual.
Bas has a passion for drawing, and a new series also emerged during his time working at the EKWC: Sincerely yours, a series of personal and loving drawings on emotional awareness. Bas considers it a luxury that he is able to reflect on the question every day: ‘How do I feel today?’ There is more talk about feelings nowadays than ever before. Could this be a hallmark of the current generation or an outcome of our hyper complicated lives? As such, Bas ponders: while there is so much thought and dialogue about emotions, are they actually being felt?
Under The Resting Clouds is an ode to joy and tranquillity that invites you to observe the world that closely surrounds you.
